Marketing Strategy and Go-to-Market
Set objectives, priorities, channels, budgets and the launch plan.
Objective
Decide what marketing must achieve, which few channels and actions will get you there, how much to invest and in what order — and plan the launch around it.
Why it matters
Doing everything at once spreads time and budget too thin to learn anything. A strategy is a set of choices about where to focus, and a go-to-market plan turns those choices into a sequence the team can execute.
Important questions
- What is the business objective, and what must marketing contribute to it?
- Which channels does our customer already use, and which can we execute well?
- What budget and time do we realistically have?
- What has to be true before we launch?
- How will we know in four, eight and twelve weeks whether it is working?
Practical checklist
- Translate business goals into marketing objectives with numbers.
- Shortlist channels and choose one to three to start with.
- Allocate budget and owners for each priority.
- Build a launch timeline: pre-launch, launch, post-launch.
- Define the metrics and review rhythm before you start.
Deliverables and tools
- Strategy on a page
- Objective, audience, positioning, priorities, channels, budget, metrics.
- Channel scorecard
- Rate channels by audience fit, cost, speed to learn and your ability to execute.
Common mistakes
- Choosing channels because competitors use them.
- Launching without a way to measure results.
- Treating the launch as a single day rather than a phase.
You are ready to move on when…
- Everyone knows the top three marketing priorities this quarter.
- You have agreed what success looks like before spending the budget.
