Stage 04 of 08

Brand Strategy and Positioning

Choose the audience, define what makes you different and decide how to talk about it.

Objective

Decide who you are for, what you want to be known for, and why a customer should choose you over the alternatives — then express it in messaging the whole business can use.

Why it matters

Positioning is the decision that makes the rest of marketing easier. When the difference is clear, content, ads, sales conversations and the website all point in the same direction, and customers can explain you to others.

Important questions

  • Which customer segment do we serve best, and why them?
  • What do we do differently that this segment genuinely values?
  • What category do customers put us in, and is that helping or hurting?
  • What proof do we have for our claims?
  • What is the one idea we want to own in the customer’s mind?

Practical checklist

  • Choose a primary segment (segmentation → targeting).
  • List your differentiators and keep only those customers value and competitors cannot easily claim.
  • Write a positioning statement.
  • Build a message hierarchy: core message, three supporting points, proof for each.
  • Test the messaging with real customers before rolling it out.

Deliverables and tools

Positioning statement
For [audience] who [need], [brand] is the [category] that [difference] because [proof].
Message house
One core message supported by three pillars, each with evidence.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to appeal to everyone.
  • Claiming differences customers do not care about.
  • Treating positioning as a slogan rather than a strategic choice.

You are ready to move on when…

  • Your team describes the business in the same way.
  • Customers repeat your key difference back to you without prompting.
